White discharge is a fluid that the body naturally produces in women to keep the vagina clean and moist. Scientifically, it is called leukorrhea. Normally, thin, odorless vaginal discharge is completely natural and harmless. However, when its amount increases excessively, becomes thick, changes color, and has a foul odor, it becomes a health problem that requires treatment. Here are the 5 main scientific reasons behind excessive vaginal discharge:
Natural hormonal changes (Physiological Factors): Hormonal changes that occur at different stages of the menstrual cycle can increase the amount of vaginal discharge. Especially during ovulation (about 14 days before menstruation), during pregnancy, and during sexual arousal, the amount of vaginal discharge naturally increases due to the increase in the level of the estrogen hormone in the body. It does not cause any odor or itching.
Vaginal Yeast Infection / Candidiasis: The main cause of thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge is a fungus called Candida albicans. This fungus grows when the natural pH of the vagina changes. Its main symptoms are severe itching and discharge along with thick discharge.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): There is a certain ratio of good bacteria and bad bacteria in the vagina. However, when the body’s immunity is low or due to the use of soaps containing chemicals, the bad bacteria multiply excessively. In this condition, the discharge is gray or thin white in color with a strong fishy odor.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs): Sexually transmitted diseases such as trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia can cause heavy vaginal discharge. In such cases, the color of the discharge may turn green or yellow, and you may experience pain in the lower abdomen, burning sensation during urination, and severe pain during sex.
Poor personal hygiene and use of chemicals: Wearing tight, non-ventilated synthetic underwear can cause sweat and moisture to accumulate in the vaginal area. This creates an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to grow. Also, regular use of artificially scented soaps and intimate washes can disrupt the natural acid balance and increase vaginal discharge.
