Main reasons for high cholesterol
Dietary habits:
Saturated fats: Fats found in red meat (beef, mutton) and dairy products (butter, ghee) increase the ‘bad cholesterol’ (LDL) in the body.
Trans fats: Fats found in bakery products, fried and fried foods are the most dangerous.
Lack of exercise: People who do not exercise enough are likely to have low ‘good cholesterol’ (HDL – which is beneficial for the body) and high bad cholesterol.
Obesity: Obesity directly affects the level of fat in the blood.
Smoking and alcohol: Smoking damages blood vessels and makes it easier for cholesterol to accumulate. Alcohol increases cholesterol levels.
Genetic factors: People with a family history of cholesterol problems are more likely to develop it.
Age: As we age, our body’s ability to handle cholesterol decreases.
Other medical conditions: People with diabetes, thyroid problems, and kidney disease are more likely to have high cholesterol.
