Cancer: Don’t be afraid, recognize and prevent it! 5 main causes
Cancer is a condition in which cells in the body grow abnormally and spread to other parts. Many cancers can be completely cured if detected early. The main factors that increase the risk of the disease are:
Tobacco and alcohol use: A large proportion of cancer deaths are caused by tobacco use. Cigarettes, bidis, and tobacco products cause cancer in the lungs, mouth, and throat. Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancer in the liver, breast, and esophagus.
Unhealthy diet: Regular consumption of processed meat, foods high in fat and salt, and foods with artificial colors can lead to cancer. A diet low in fruits and vegetables leads to digestive cancers.
Environmental toxins and radiation: Exposure to air pollution, pesticides, and industrial fumes (such as asbestos) can increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight can cause skin cancer.
Genetics: Some people are more likely to develop cancer if their parents or close relatives have had it. About 5% to 10% of cancers are caused by inherited genetic changes.
Infections and viruses: Some viruses can cause cancer by changing the cells in the body. For example, human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer, and hepatitis B and C viruses can cause liver cancer.
