Choking is caused by the accumulation of excess mucus in the lungs and airways. This causes great discomfort when coughing and breathing. The main reasons for this are as follows:
Viral/bacterial infections: Colds, flu, bronchitis or pneumonia are the most common causes of phlegm. This occurs because the body produces more mucus to fight germs.
Allergic problems: Inhaling dust particles, smoke, pollen or certain fragrances in the air causes the airways to become irritated. This causes more mucus to build up as a defense mechanism.
Asthma: In asthma sufferers, the airways narrow and thick mucus accumulates. This causes a ‘wheezing’ sound when breathing and a feeling of heaviness in the chest.
Smoking and air pollution: Smoking damages the cleaning system in the lungs. This leads to mucus remaining in the lungs and a chronic condition called ‘Smoker’s Cough’.
Acid reflux (GERD): Stomach acid that comes up through the esophagus can irritate the airways. This can cause a feeling of mucus in the chest and throat and a chronic cough.
