Stroke can be divided into two main types, each with different causes:
Ischemic Stroke (Blood flow interruption):
This is the most common type (about 80-85%). Blood flow to the brain is blocked due to fatty deposits (atherosclerosis) or blood clots. This causes the brain cells to not get oxygen and nutrients.
Hemorrhagic Stroke (Hemorrhagic Stroke):
The blood vessels in the brain become weak and burst, causing blood to leak into the brain. This puts pressure on the brain cells and destroys them.
Risk Factors for Stroke:
High Blood Pressure: This is the biggest culprit for stroke. It weakens the blood vessels and causes them to burst.
Diabetes: High blood sugar damages blood vessels and increases the risk of blood clots.
Cholesterol: Fatty deposits in blood vessels block blood flow.
Smoking and alcohol: Smoking narrows blood vessels and increases the risk of blood clots.
Heart disease: Some arrhythmias in the heart can cause blood clots to form, which can then travel to the brain and cause a stroke.
Obesity and lack of exercise.
