Knee pain is a very common health problem not only among the elderly, but also among young people today. It can be caused by everything from wear and tear on the joints to lifestyle mistakes we make. The main causes are:
Osteoarthritis: As we age, the soft cushion-like part called cartilage between the bones in the knee wears down. This causes the bones to rub against each other, causing severe pain and swelling. This is the main cause of knee pain seen in adults.
Obesity and body weight: The knees bear the entire weight of the body when we walk and stand. When we gain too much weight, the joints in the knees are under unbearable pressure, which quickly leads to wear and tear and chronic pain.
Ligament and Tendon Injuries: Injuries to the ligaments that connect the muscles and bones of the knee (for example, ACL Tear) during sports or falls can cause severe pain. If proper rest is not given, this can become chronic pain.
Increased Uric Acid (Gout): When the level of uric acid in the blood increases, they accumulate in the knee joints in the form of crystals (Urate crystals). This causes sudden severe pain and redness and heat in the knees.
Lack of exercise and incorrect sitting: Sitting in front of the computer for hours with your legs folded and lack of physical activity weakens the muscles around the knees. When the muscles become weak, direct pressure is placed on the knee joints and pain occurs.
