Dandruff and allergies are closely related. Itchy scalp and runny nose can often go hand in hand. The main reasons behind these are:
Fungal Growth: This fungus, called Malassezia, is the main culprit in causing dandruff. The skin’s reaction to this fungus can cause allergies in some people and cause the skin to peel off in layers.
Seborrheic Dermatitis: This is a type of allergic condition seen in people with oily skin. It causes dandruff on the head and redness and itching on the eyebrows, sides of the nose, and behind the ears.
Climate change: In winter, when the humidity in the air decreases, the scalp dries out and dandruff increases. Similarly, breathing in pollen and dust particles in the air can also cause respiratory allergies (sneezing, colds).
Contact Dermatitis: Chemicals in strong shampoos, hair dyes, and soaps can cause allergies on the scalp. This can lead to itchy skin and white patches like dandruff.
Immunity and Stress: When stress increases, the body’s immunity decreases and the risk of fungal infections and allergic symptoms increases.
