Main causes of knee pain
Osteoarthritis: This is a condition in which the cartilage covering the bones of the knee wears down with age. This causes the knees to rub together and cause severe pain.
Obesity: Being overweight puts excessive pressure on the knees. The knees have to bear many times the weight of the body while walking and climbing stairs, which accelerates the wear and tear.
Muscle weakness: If the muscles in the thigh (Quadriceps) that support the knee are weak, more pressure is placed on the joints and pain is felt.
Injuries: Injuries to the ligaments or the cushion-like part of the knee, such as the meniscus, can cause pain.
Arthritis: Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout (caused by increased uric acid) can cause swelling and pain in the knees.
Bad habits: Sitting on the floor for a long time, using an Indian toilet, and climbing stairs excessively can increase knee pain.
