Dark spots are a major skin problem that is found in both men and women, but they are more common in women. This is a condition in which dark brown or black spots appear on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and upper lip. This happens when the pigment ‘melanin’, which gives color to the skin, is produced excessively in some areas. Here are the main reasons behind this:
Sun Exposure: The most important reason for dark spots to appear and become darker is the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. When sunlight directly hits the skin, the body produces more melanin to protect the cells. This can cause the spots to darken.
Hormonal Changes: Hormones play a major role in the development of dark spots in women. Many women get dark spots due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. That is why it is also called the ‘Mask of Pregnancy’. It is also seen in those who take oral contraceptive pills.
Genetics: Heredity also plays a big role in the risk of getting dark spots. If a mother or sister in the family has this problem, then the risk of getting dark spots in the next generation of women is much higher than others.
Use of wrong cosmetics: Using poor quality bleaching creams, face washes containing chemicals, and makeup products that do not suit the skin can cause allergies and severe irritation on the skin. This can later turn into dark spots.
Severe mental stress and thyroid problems: Chronic mental stress increases the ‘cortisol’ hormone in the body, which stimulates the production of melanin. Additionally, dark circles are also a symptom of thyroid disorders.
