Are you bothered by small red bumps and itching on your skin? 5 reasons behind ‘folliculitis’

Folliculitis is an infection and inflammation of the hair follicles in the skin. It is usually found on the face, arms, back, and buttocks. The main causes are:

Bacterial and fungal infections: Folliculitis occurs when Staphylococcus bacteria, which are commonly found on the skin, or certain types of fungi, enter the hair follicles and multiply.

Wrong shaving and waxing methods: The small scratches on the skin that occur when removing hair allow bacteria to enter. Using blades without cleaning them properly and shaving against the direction of hair growth can also cause razor bumps.

Tight clothing and excessive sweating: Wearing synthetic clothing that sticks to the skin causes sweat and dirt to accumulate on the skin. This can lead to clogged hair follicles and infections.

Unclean swimming pools and hot tubs: Swimming in swimming pools or hot tubs that are not properly chlorinated can spread the bacteria Pseudomonas, which can cause a condition called hot tub folliculitis.

Excessive oiliness and creams on the skin: Applying thick oils, Vaseline, or certain types of cosmetic creams to the skin can clog the pores of the hair follicles. This can naturally lead to the formation of pimples.
