If detected early, sciatica can be cured with physiotherapy, light exercises, and medications. Avoiding sitting for long periods of time and practicing exercises that strengthen the spine will be beneficial
Sciatica is a pain that starts in the middle and spreads through the buttocks and the back of the leg to the foot. The main reasons that lead to this are as follows:
1. Disc herniation (Slipped Disc)
This is a condition in which the discs between the vertebrae in the spine protrude and put pressure on the nerves there. This is the most common cause of pain that spreads to the legs.
2. Spinal Stenosis
This is a condition in which the space inside the spine narrows with age, causing obstruction to the spinal cord and the nerves from it. This causes severe pain when standing or walking.
3. Spondylolisthesis
This is a condition in which one vertebra in the spine slips off the vertebra below it. This can compress nerves and cause back pain to radiate down the legs.
4. Piriformis Syndrome
When the piriformis muscle in the buttock becomes stiff or swollen, it puts pressure on the sciatic nerve that runs underneath it. This can cause pain to radiate down the legs, especially when sitting.
5. Muscle Strain
When the muscles that support the spine are overworked, they can become swollen and affect nearby nerves.
6. Other Causes
Rarely, tumors in the spine, infections, or diabetic neuropathy can also cause this type of pain.
