When an animal control officer in New Jersey spotted a red-tailed hawk perched atop a pile of trash, he knew something wasn’t right. The bird, usually a majestic predator of the skies, was uncharacteristically still, staring blankly as if frozen in place.

Upon closer inspection, the officer realized the hawk was suffering from a broken wing, leaving him stranded and vulnerable on the curb. Knowing the bird needed immediate help, the officer carefully secured him and transported him to the Mercer County Wildlife Center.

The hawk is now receiving expert care from rehabilitators. While a broken wing is a serious injury for a raptor, his caretakers are optimistic. With proper rest and treatment, this “gorgeous” bird is expected to make a full recovery and eventually return to the skies where he belongs.
