Main causes of thyroid problems
Autoimmune disorders: The most common cause is when the body’s immune system attacks its own thyroid gland.
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: This causes the gland to function less (Hypothyroidism).
Graves’ Disease: This causes the thyroid to produce too much (Hyperthyroidism).
Iodine deficiency: The body needs iodine to produce thyroid hormone. A lack of iodine in the diet can affect the function of the gland.
Genetic causes: If your family (mother, father, siblings) have thyroid problems, you are more likely to develop them.
Thyroiditis: Inflammation of the gland due to infections or other causes can cause changes in hormone production.
Pregnancy: Some women experience changes in thyroid function after giving birth.
Medications: Some medications (such as those used for depression) can affect thyroid function.
