High-Purine Diet – Main Cause:
Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down a chemical called ‘Purine’ that enters the body through food. Excessive consumption of red meat, fish (shrimp, mackerel, etc.), organ meats such as liver, mushrooms, and legumes can lead to increased uric acid.
Poor Kidney Function:
The kidneys filter excess uric acid in the blood and excrete it through urine. When the filtering capacity of the kidneys decreases, uric acid begins to accumulate in the body.
Overweight and Obesity:
When body weight increases, the amount of uric acid produced by the body increases, and the ability of the kidneys to filter and remove it decreases.
Alcohol & Sugary Drinks:
Regular consumption of alcoholic beverages like beer, sodas containing fructose, cold drinks, and artificially sweetened drinks can sharply increase uric acid levels.
Genetics & Family History:
If your parents or close relatives have a history of gout or high uric acid, it can also be caused by genetic factors.
Use of certain medications:
Some diuretics (water pills) used to lower blood pressure can increase the level of uric acid in the body.
