Risk Factors for Cancer

Genetics: Some cancers are passed down through families. Mutations in certain genes inherited from parents increase the risk of cancer.

Tobacco use: Cigarettes, beedi, and chewing tobacco are the leading causes of cancer. They are the main cause of cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, and esophagus.

Lifestyle:

 

Diet: Eating processed foods, excessive red meat, and foods high in fat and sugar increase the risk of colon cancer.

Physical inactivity: Lack of exercise and being overweight increase the risk of breast cancer and uterine cancer.

Environment and pollution: Long-term exposure to carcinogenic chemicals (e.g., asbestos, benzene, and certain pesticides) can lead to cancer.

Infections: Some viruses and bacteria can cause cancer.
