Main causes of edema in the body
Excessive salt consumption: Excessive salt (sodium) consumption in the diet causes the body to retain more water.
Sitting in the same position for a long time: Sitting or standing for a long time causes fluid to accumulate in the legs due to gravity.
Decreased organ function:
Heart: When the heart is unable to pump blood (heart failure), fluid accumulates in the body.
Kidneys: When the kidneys function slows down, they are unable to excrete excess fluid and edema occurs.
Liver: Decreased protein levels due to liver disease (liver cirrhosis) can cause edema.
Medications: Blood pressure, diabetes, or the use of painkillers can cause edema as a side effect.
Hormonal changes: Edema is common in the body due to hormonal changes during pregnancy or just before menstruation.
Allergies: Certain foods or insect bites can cause allergies and lead to edema.
Malnutrition: Edema can occur even if the amount of protein (Albumin) in the body is very low.
