Is your comb full of hair? 5 main scientific reasons behind severe hair loss

Are you worried about excessive hair loss while showering and combing your hair every day? It is normal for a person to lose 50 to 100 strands of hair from their head every day. But when more hair falls out or new hair does not grow in accordance with the loss, it leads to baldness and hair loss. Here are 5 main scientific reasons behind hair loss:

Hormonal changes and inheritance (Androgenetic Alopecia): The main scientific reason for hereditary hair loss in men and women is the hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). When the level of this hormone increases, it shrinks the hair follicles (hair roots) on the scalp and shortens the life of the hair. Additionally, hormonal changes in women after childbirth, during menopause, and in those with PCOD can cause severe hair loss.

Nutritional Deficiencies and Anemia: Certain vitamins and minerals are essential for the growth of our hair cells. Anemia caused by low iron levels in the body, vitamin D3, vitamin B12, and zinc deficiency weaken the hair roots. In addition, the lack of protein in the diet required to produce keratin, the main component of hair, can also increase hair loss.

Mental Stress and High Fever (Telogen Effluvium): When experiencing severe mental stress, the body releases the hormone ‘cortisol’. This suddenly stops the growth phase of the hair and pushes it into the shedding phase. Scientifically, this is called Telogen Effluvium. Severe hair loss occurs 2-3 months after the onset of severe typhoid, dengue fever, and COVID.

Thyroid Disorders and Other Diseases: Increased (Hyperthyroidism) and decreased (Hypothyroidism) activity of the thyroid gland can severely affect the hair growth cycle. When thyroid hormones become unstable, the production of cells in the scalp slows down and hair starts falling out quickly.

Scalp Infections & Styling: Chronic severe dandruff on the scalp (Seborrheic Dermatitis) can cause fungal infections and disrupt the nutrition of the hair roots. In addition, regular straightening, bleaching, and using shampoos and hair dyes containing strong chemicals can also damage the natural strength of the hair and increase hair loss.
