When is vaginal discharge dangerous in women? 5 main scientific reasons that should not be ignored

White discharge is a natural process related to the health of the female reproductive system. The fluid secreted by the cells in the cervix and vagina helps cleanse the airways and protectagainst bacterial infections. Therefore, light white or transparent, odorless vaginal discharge is completely normal.

However, if its amount is excessive, looks like thick yogurt, is yellow or green in color, and is accompanied by severe itching and odor, it is a symptom. Here are the 5 main scientific reasons behind this:

Natural hormonal changes (Physiological Causes): During certain times of the menstrual cycle, vaginal discharge naturally increases due to hormonal changes. Especially just before menstruation, during ovulation, and during pregnancy, you may experience more vaginal discharge than usual due to the increase in estrogen levels in the body. This is completely harmless.

Vaginal Candidiasis / Yeast Infection: This infection occurs when the fungus Candida, which is naturally found in the vagina, grows excessively. This results in a thick, cottage cheese-like discharge and severe itching and redness in the vagina. This can occur when the immune system is weakened or when taking antibiotics.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): The vagina contains a certain ratio of good bacteria and bad bacteria. However, bacterial vaginosis occurs when bad bacteria multiply excessively due to decreased body hygiene or changes in pH. This can cause a thin, gray or white discharge, along with a strong fishy odor.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Trichomoniasis & STDs): Sexually transmitted infections (STDs) such as trichomoniasis and chlamydia can cause discharge. In this condition, you may experience a yellow or green, thick discharge, severe pain in the lower abdomen, and burning sensation while urinating. In such cases, you and your partner should also seek treatment.

Use of chemicals and allergies: Market-available scented soaps, intimate washes (Vaginal washes), perfumes, and sanitary pads containing harsh chemicals can destroy the natural flora of the vagina and cause allergies and discharge.
