Stomach cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. It is often detected late because it does not show symptoms in the beginning. The main causes are:
H. pylori Infection: The long-term presence of the ‘Helicobacter pylori’ bacteria, which causes stomach ulcers, increases the risk of cancer. This causes inflammation in the stomach wall.
Diet: Excessive consumption of foods high in salt, dried fish, processed meat, and pickles is harmful to the stomach. A decrease in the diet of fruits and vegetables containing fiber is also a reason.
Smoking and alcohol: Smokers are twice as likely to develop stomach cancer. The toxins in tobacco damage the lining of the stomach. Excessive alcohol consumption also irritates the stomach wall and causes changes in the cells.
Obesity and lifestyle: Being overweight increases the risk of developing cancer in the upper part of the stomach. Lack of physical activity and a diet high in fat contribute to this.
Heredity and age: If someone in the family has had stomach cancer, others are at higher risk. Also, the disease is most common in people over the age of 50.
