The main reasons behind lumps found on the body are as follows:
1. Lipoma
This is one of the most common lumps found on the body. These are soft lumps that are formed by the accumulation of fat under the skin. They move and feel painless when touched. They are usually not dangerous.
2. Cysts
Cysts occur when fluid or air accumulates in the glands of the skin. The most important of these is the sebaceous cyst. These usually appear as small round lumps just below the skin.
3. Swollen Lymph Nodes
When the body has an infection, the lymph glands in the neck, armpits, and groin swell as part of the immune system. Such lumps usually disappear on their own when the fever and cold subside.
4. Ganglion Cyst
These are lumps that appear around the joints or tendons. They are usually found in the wrists or fingers. This is due to fluid buildup in the joints.
5. Hernia
This is a condition where the internal organs protrude when the muscles in the abdomen become weak. These lumps are more noticeable when coughing or bending over.
6. When the lumps become dangerous (Tumors)
Rarely, these lumps can be the growth of cancerous cells. You should see a doctor immediately if you notice the following symptoms:
If the lumps are growing rapidly.
If the lump is experiencing severe pain or hardness.
If the skin in the area where the lump is has a change in color.
Things to note:
Do not touch the lumps: Do not try to press or pop the lumps with your hands.
See a doctor: It is advisable for those who have hereditary tumors or who notice new tumors to undergo a thorough examination (biopsy or scan).
