It is normal to lose about 50 to 100 hair strands every day. But if you are losing more than that, there may be the following reasons behind it:
1. Genetics
This is the most common cause of hair loss. If your father or mother has hair loss or baldness in your family, it is likely to be inherited. This is called ‘androgenetic alopecia’.
2. Hormonal changes
Changes in the hormonal levels in the body can cause hair loss.
Thyroid: Increased or decreased activity of the thyroid gland can cause hair loss.
Postpartum: Many people experience hair loss due to changes in hormone levels after childbirth.
PCOS: Hormonal problems such as PCOS in women cause hair loss.
3. Nutritional deficiency
A deficiency in the nutrients needed for hair growth in our diet can increase hair loss.
Iron: Hair loss is more common in people with anemia.
Protein: A deficiency in protein, which is the building block of hair, can weaken hair.
Vitamins: Deficiency of vitamin D, B12, and biotin can cause hair loss.
4. Stress
Hair loss can increase when going through severe mental stress or physical trauma. This is called ‘telogen effluvium’. It usually decreases when the mind calms down.
5. Improper hair care
Hair styling with excessive heat (straightening, curling).
Shampoos and hair dyes containing strong chemicals.
Tying hair tightly (Traction Alopecia).
6. Dandruff and scalp infections
Dandruff and fungal infections on the scalp weaken the hair roots and cause itching and hair loss.
Some tips to prevent hair loss:
Food: Include eggs, gooseberries, spinach, nuts, and fish in your diet.
Oil massage: Massaging the scalp with lukewarm coconut oil twice a week will increase blood flow.
Sleep: Get 7-8 hours of good sleep every day.
