Reasons for a sore throat

Viral infections: The viruses that cause the common cold, flu, and influenza are the most common causes of a sore throat.

Bacterial infections: A type of bacterial infection called ‘Strep throat’ can cause a sore throat. It can be more severe than a viral infection.

Allergies: Allergies to dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold in the air can cause an itchy and painful throat.

Dry air: Especially in the winter, when the humidity in the air decreases, the throat can become dry and sore.

Air pollution: Cigarette smoke, vehicle exhaust, and chemical odors can irritate the throat.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD): A condition in which stomach acid flows back up into the throat, causing a burning sensation in the throat.

Excessive use of voice: Excessive talking, shouting, or singing can strain the throat and cause pain.
