Main reasons for back pain
Poor Posture & Lifestyle:
Sitting in the wrong way: Working hunched over in a chair for a long time puts a lot of pressure on the muscles of the spine.
Heavy bags: Carrying heavy bags on the shoulders of school children and others affects the natural curvature of the spine.
Lack of exercise: When the muscles that provide strength to the spine do not get enough exercise, they become weak and cause pain.
Muscle strain:
Sudden lifting of heavy weights and sudden movements (for example, turning quickly) can cause strain on the muscles or ligaments of the spine.
Disc Problems:
A slipped disc or wear and tear in the ‘disc’ that acts as a cushion between the vertebrae in the spine can put pressure on the nerves and cause severe pain.
Age and Bone Health:
As we age, bones become weak (Osteoporosis). Arthritis also causes back pain.
Stress:
When there is severe mental stress, the muscles of the whole body feel tight (Muscle tension). This increases back pain.
Things to consider to reduce pain:
Adjust your sitting posture (Ergonomic Setup): Use chairs that help keep your spine straight for those who work on the computer.
Proper exercise: Do ‘Core Exercises’ that strengthen the spine as directed by a physiotherapist.
Lifting technique: When lifting weights, be careful to lift them from your knees without bending your back.
Sleeping technique: Avoiding very soft mattresses and sleeping on a slightly firm mattress is good for the health of your spine.
