A kidney stone is a condition in which salts and minerals in the urine clump together and form crystals. It can occur in the kidneys, ureters, or bladder. It can be prevented by eating a proper diet and drinking water. The main causes are:
Dehydration: The most important reason for the formation of kidney stones is not drinking enough water. When the body is dehydrated, the urine becomes concentrated and the salts in it accumulate and turn into stones.
Diet: Excessive consumption of salt increases the amount of calcium in the urine. In addition, excessive consumption of protein-rich foods such as meat and eggs, and foods high in oxalate (for example, milk, nuts) increase the risk of stone formation.
Obesity and lifestyle: Excessive weight gain and lack of exercise affect the body’s metabolism. This changes the acid level in the urine and leads to the formation of stones.
Heredity: If someone in your family has kidney stones, then the next generation is more likely to get them. Some people’s bodies naturally produce more of these crystals.
Other health problems: People with digestive problems, high uric acid levels, and urinary tract infections (UTIs) are also more likely to get kidney stones.
