Does your skin itch and swell? 5 main causes

Skin allergies occur when our body’s immune system overreacts to certain external substances. This causes itching, red bumps, and blisters. The main causes are:

Contact dermatitis: This is an allergy that occurs when certain substances come into direct contact with the skin. Chemicals in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, hair dyes, and perfumes can irritate the skin. Also, wearing jewelry containing nickel can cause allergies in some people.

Foods: Eating certain foods can cause skin allergies. Symptoms of this include itching, swelling, and red bumps (urticaria) when eating eggs, milk, seafood (shrimp, crab), peanuts, and wheat.

Environmental factors: Inhaling dust particles, pollen, and pet dander in the air and touching the skin can cause allergies. Mold and air pollution in humid environments can also be harmful to the skin.

Insect bites: When a mosquito, bee, ant, or certain types of beetle bites, their venom mixes with the skin, causing swelling and itching. In some people, this can lead to severe allergic reactions.

Side effects of medications: Some antibiotics and painkillers can cause skin bumps or blisters. These changes can occur within hours or days of taking the medication.
