Melasma is a skin problem that is especially common in women. In which dark or brown spots appear on the cheeks, nose, and forehead, treatment is needed to completely change the cause.
Sun exposure: The most important cause of melasma is ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight. These increase the production of melanin in the skin and make the spots darker. It is mandatory to use an umbrella or sunscreen when going out in the sun.
Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy or when using birth control pills can cause melasma. This is also called the ‘mask of pregnancy’. These spots fade in many people when hormone levels return to normal.
Thyroid problems: Changes in the functioning of the thyroid gland can affect skin color. Since people with thyroid are more likely to develop dark spots, it is advisable to get a hormone test.
Unhealthy cosmetics: Low-quality bleaching creams and soaps containing harsh chemicals can damage the skin and cause dark spots. Avoid products that irritate the skin.
Heredity: If someone in the family has dark spots, there is a higher genetic risk of it developing in others. In such cases, special care needs to be taken for the skin.
