The first few minutes of a snake bite are very crucial. Providing proper first aid will help prevent the spread of venom and ensure timely treatment. The main things to do are:
Calm the patient: If the person bitten by a snake is scared, the heart rate increases and blood flow increases. This can cause the venom to spread quickly throughout the body. So, calm the patient and keep him or her still.
Keep the bitten area low: Make sure the bitten area (arm or leg) is below the level of the heart. This will help slow down the venom from reaching the heart and brain.
Wash the wound: Washing the wound with clean water and soap will help remove the venom on the surface. But do not press or rub the wound.
Change jewelry: The bite area is likely to swell quickly. So remove rings, bracelets, watches, and tight clothing immediately.
Keep still: It is a good idea to splint the bitten area with a piece of wood or cloth to keep it from moving. Muscle movement can spread the venom.
