The prostate is a small gland found below the bladder in men. Changes in this gland as we age can lead to various health problems. The main causes are:
Age and gland swelling (BPH): The prostate gland naturally enlarges as we age. This is called ‘benign prostatic hyperplasia’ (BPH). When the gland enlarges, it puts pressure on the urethra, causing difficulty urinating and frequent urination.
Hormonal changes: As men age, the levels of hormones, including testosterone, change. These hormonal changes can cause excessive growth of prostate cells.
Prostatitis (infection): An infection caused by bacteria can cause the prostate gland to swell. This can cause severe pain during urination, fever, and back pain. It is common in both young and old men.
Genetic factors: If your father or brothers have had prostate problems or cancer in your family, you are more likely to have this disease.
Unhealthy lifestyle: Obesity, lack of exercise, and a diet high in fat can affect prostate health. A diet low in vegetables and fruits increases the risk of problems, including prostate cancer.
