Why does the uterus prolapse? 5 main reasons you should know
This is a condition in which the uterus descends into the vagina when the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus weaken. It is more common in the elderly and those who have given birth more than once. The main causes are:
Conditions related to childbirth: During normal childbirth (Vaginal delivery), there is a lot of pressure on the pelvic muscles. Having multiple births or having a baby who is overweight during delivery can cause these muscles to become enlarged and weak.
Age and menopause: It is natural for muscle strength to decrease as we age. After menopause, the level of estrogen hormone in the body decreases. Since this hormone is essential for maintaining the strength of the pelvic muscles, its deficiency leads to uterine prolapse.
Chronic cough and constipation: People with chronic, severe cough or constipation have increased intra-abdominal pressure. Straining to pass stool can weaken the pelvic muscles and push the uterus down.
Obesity and weight lifting: Excessive weight gain puts extra strain on the pelvic muscles. Similarly, regular lifting of heavy weights without proper precautions can also cause these muscles to become loose.
Surgeries and heredity: Previous surgeries on the uterus or pelvic area can weaken the muscles. Also, some people are genetically predisposed to weak connective tissues.
