This is a condition in which excess fluid accumulates in the tissues of the body. The main causes of this are as follows:
1. Salt content in the diet
If there is too much salt in the diet, the body starts to retain more water (Water Retention). This is the main reason for edema in the limbs and abdomen.
2. Prolonged standing or sitting
Sitting or standing in the same position for a long time reduces blood flow in the legs and causes fluid to accumulate. This can cause swelling in the feet and ankles.
3. Kidney and liver diseases
When the kidneys are unable to excrete waste and excess water, swelling can occur in the face and legs. Similarly, liver problems can also cause fluid to accumulate in the abdomen.
4. Heart problems
When the pumping capacity of the heart decreases, blood flow slows down and fluid accumulates in the legs and lungs.
5. Side effects of medications
The use of high blood pressure medications, pain killers, and steroids can cause edema in some people.
Things to keep in mind to reduce edema:
Reduce salt: Reduce the amount of salt in your diet as much as possible.
Potassium-rich foods: Including bananas, fresh juice, and tomatoes in your diet will help eliminate excess water from the body.
Exercise: Walking and light exercises will increase blood flow.
Elevate your legs: While lying down, keeping your legs slightly above the level of your heart will help reduce edema.
