We have heard stories of unparalleled bravery in military history around the world. The country is honoring Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis, an American soldier who risked his own life to save a fellow soldier from death, with the Medal of Honor, the highest military honor. The White House approved this decision after years of waiting and clamor.
Who is Michael Ollis?
Michael Ollis, a native of Staten Island, New York, was a member of the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army. This brave 24-year-old soldier died during a terrorist attack in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, on August 28, 2013.
The moment he faced death
Ollis used his own body as a shield to protect Polish soldier Lieutenant Karol Sierpicka during a suicide attack. When Ollis saw a suicide bomber about to explode, he did not hesitate to hug the Polish officer in front of him and protect him. Although Ollis was killed in the explosion, Karol Sierpicka, whom he saved, is still alive today. He named his son ‘Michael’.
Late recognition
Ollis’ family, colleagues and representatives have been calling for years for the Medal of Honor for his bravery. Although he had previously been awarded the ‘Silver Star’, the public felt that it was not a substitute for his sacrifice.
Now that Ollis has received this honor, with the approval of President Donald Trump, it is a moment of great pride for the residents of Staten Island and the American military.
Family Response
“It is a great honor to know that the country has not forgotten Michael’s fighting spirit and sacrifice,” his parents responded. The family also carries out many charitable activities through the ‘SSG Michael Ollis Freedom Foundation’, which was established in Michael’s memory.
More than being a soldier, Michael Ollis gave the world a great message of humanity and friendship. Such brave men who give their lives for their fellow man, even in the midst of conflicts between enemy countries, always amaze the world.
