The basic cause of these two problems is the blockage of the pores in the skin. The difference and causes between them are as follows:
What is the difference between them?
Blackheads (Open Comedones): Blackheads are when the pores are open and the fat inside comes into contact with air and oxidizes and turns black.
Whiteheads (Closed Comedones): This is a condition where the pores are closed by a thin layer of skin and the fat remains white due to the lack of air.
Main causes:
1. Excess sebum
The sebaceous glands in the skin produce excess oil, which causes the pores to clog quickly. This is more common in people with oily skin.
2. Hormonal changes
Hormonal changes during adolescence, menstruation, and pregnancy increase oil production. This leads to acne and blackheads.
3. Poor skin hygiene
Not washing the dust and dirt from the face properly every day can lead to the accumulation of impurities in the pores. Sleeping without removing makeup is also a major culprit.
4. Dead Skin Cells
If the dead cells that the skin naturally sheds are not removed properly, they combine with oil and clog the pores.
5. Use of cosmetics
The use of excessive creams and moisturizers can make the skin unable to breathe. Avoid ‘comedogenic’ (pore-clogging) products and choose ‘non-comedogenic’ products.
6. Diet and stress
Sweet foods, dairy products, and oily foods can increase this problem in some people. Excessive mental stress can also affect the health of the skin.
Remedies:
Scrubming: Use a mild scrub once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells.
Steaming: Steaming your face can help open clogged pores.
Salicylic acid: Face washes containing salicylic acid are effective in removing blackheads.
